Vietnamese President Begins First Official Visit to Philippines
The Vietnamese leader and his wife, Ngo Phuong Ly, arrived in Manila aboard a Vietnam Airlines flight, where they were received by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., as reported by state media.
The visit is described as the first time a senior Vietnamese Communist Party figure has traveled to the Philippines in an official capacity, underscoring its diplomatic significance.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is expected to formally welcome To Lam on Monday, followed by high-level talks covering a broad range of areas, including trade, investment, food security, defense cooperation, maritime issues, education, tourism, and cultural exchanges.
Reports indicate that Vietnam continues to serve as the Philippines’ only strategic partner in Southeast Asia and remains a key player in the country’s economic and security partnerships in the region.
The visit follows recent discussions during an ASEAN summit, where both sides reportedly agreed to develop a long-term rice trade arrangement, reflecting growing economic coordination between Hanoi and Manila.
