Europe Warn Israeli NGO Law Could Restrict Humanitarian Aid in Palestinian Territories

(MENAFN) A group of 22 countries along with senior European officials has expressed concern that a recent Israeli legal decision upholding a controversial NGO registration law could significantly hinder humanitarian operations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, according to reports.

In a joint statement, the signatories said Israel’s High Court had rejected an appeal by international non-governmental organizations challenging the law. They warned that enforcing the legislation in its current form could “affect and severely limit” the ability of humanitarian groups to operate in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.

Officials described the ruling as “deeply concerning,” urging Israel not to implement the law as it stands. They argued that it would further restrict aid organizations already facing major challenges in responding to urgent humanitarian needs in the region.

International NGOs were described as playing a central role in delivering essential services alongside Palestinian organizations and UN agencies. These services include water, sanitation, healthcare, education, nutrition, and demining operations.

The statement emphasized that such humanitarian work is vital for civilian survival and well-being across Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

The signatories also warned that the NGO registration law is part of a broader set of restrictions affecting humanitarian activity, including limited border access hours, constraints on goods classified as dual-use, and administrative barriers that complicate aid delivery.

They stressed that humanitarian access must remain unrestricted and called on Israel to ensure the safe and rapid delivery of aid while avoiding measures that obstruct humanitarian organizations.
