Rival Demonstrations Erupt in Glasgow as Police Separate Clashing Groups

(MENAFN) Tensions flared in Glasgow on Saturday as opposing groups held demonstrations that escalated into confrontations with police amid heightened debate over migration issues, according to reports.

Anti-immigration protesters and anti-racism activists gathered in different parts of the city, with police deployed to prevent direct contact between the two sides. The atmosphere became increasingly tense as officers attempted to maintain order and enforce separation lines.

An anti-racism rally organized by the NGO Stand Up to Racism took place in central Glasgow, where participants called for support for refugees and opposition to far-right movements.

Demonstrators carried Scottish and Palestinian flags and chanted, “Refugees are welcome here,” while also hearing calls to “reclaim the streets from the far right,” as stated by reports.

Around 70 counter-demonstrators also arrived, many dressed in black and wearing balaclavas, contributing to the heightened tension at the scene.

As police worked to keep both groups apart, some anti-immigration protesters pushed against barriers and clashed with officers. Some counter-protesters also attempted to breach the separation line, leading to further scuffles with law enforcement.

The demonstrations come amid broader national debate following a recent stabbing incident that has intensified political and social tensions surrounding migration, according to reports.
